Discover the Faculty of Engineering at Kyambogo University: Innovating solutions, empowering engineers, shaping futures

Our History

The Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK) originated in 1928 as a technical school on Makerere Hill, later relocating to Nakawa in 1942 and then Kyambogo Hill in 1954, where it evolved into the Uganda Technical College (UTC) Kyambogo. In 1968, UTC was upgraded to UPK, tasked with training and coordinating technical teachers across Uganda.

In 2001-2002, UPK merged with the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE) and the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK) to form Kyambogo University. UPK became the Faculty of Engineering, comprising three departments: Civil and Building Engineering, Mechanical and Production Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Over time, structural changes occurred, including the creation of the Department of Lands and Architectural Studies, later the School of the Built Environment. By 2020, the Faculty of Engineering expanded to five departments:

  • Civil and Environmental Engineering,
  • Mechanical and Production Engineering,
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering,
  • Biomedical and Mechatronics Engineering, and
  • Mining, Chemical, and Petroleum Engineering.
